One of the interesting aspects on this is the use, or non use, of slaves. To be perfectly honest, slavery is the most unproductive way of conducting business known. As has been proved to all societies that have used slaves in the past, generally to their cost. Let us look at this a little more closely. Slaves, unlike paid workers, do not have any incentive to work in any more than a ‘the bare minimum possible’ style. There is no incentive for slaves to do any more than they have to do. If they work hard, do they receive bonus payments on their wages? The prospect of promotion, and therefore a better lifestyle? No, the best a slave can expect is less fear of the lash! Paid workers have a natural tendency to do their best, to impress their bosses in order to progress up the work force to increase their wealth and status. But slaves don’t need pay I hear the slavers cry. Ah, yes, but have you considered this fine point. Slaves don’t require pay, but they do require feeding, clothing, housing, medical care- all at the expense of the person or corporation that owns them. Workers on the other hand have to fund their own housing costs, their own power and entertainment costs, their own medicare if not provided as part of their work contract, their own meals, their own clothes etc etc. And, unlike slaves, part of the workers wages are returned back to the State they work for in the form of taxes, helping the state as a whole. A number of studies have shown that the costs of keeping slaves far outweighs any benefits. Plus, slaves are not unknown to revolt against their masters and have in ancient times become the masters themselves, the former masters becoming the new slaves. As to the point why the Caldari and the Amarr are allies, the saying ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend’ springs to mind. Is that not why the Minmatar are the allies of the Gallente? War I fear will come between us all, and all we love and cherish will burn in the fires of exploding stars. We can but hope those that survive will build a better galaxy.
